Why Waste Collection Vehicles Need a Different Camera Configuration

A refuse lorry presents a camera challenge that a standard commercial vehicle does not. The vehicle stops hundreds of times a day in residential and commercial streets. Crew members work outside the vehicle at the rear, at the nearside, and around the bin lift. Pedestrians, cyclists, and parked cars are present at every stop. The driver has significant blind spots to the nearside and rear that cannot be resolved by mirrors alone. Camera Positions for a Refuse Vehicle

A correctly specified MDVR system for a waste collection vehicle typically uses four to eight cameras. The camera positions and their specific functions:

Forward-facing: The road ahead, traffic, junctions, and any incidents involving other vehicles or pedestrians ahead of the vehicle. Standard for all commercial vehicles; applies equally to refuse lorries operating on urban routes with frequent stops and starts.

Nearside: The passenger-side blind spot along the full length of the vehicle. For refuse lorries, this covers the area where crew members walk alongside the vehicle between collection points and where cyclists most commonly come into conflict with the vehicle. Durability Requirements

Waste collection vehicles operate in conditions that are significantly harder on camera equipment than standard commercial vehicles. Cameras at the rear of a refuse lorry are exposed to moisture, waste contamination, vibration from the compaction cycle, and physical contact. Cameras at the nearside and offside face road spray, carwash cycles, and occasional contact with kerbs and infrastructure.

IP67-rated cameras — dust-tight and submersible to one metre — are the minimum appropriate standard for external cameras on a refuse vehicle. Cameras in the bin lift area should be rated for the specific environmental exposure at that position, which may include high-pressure wash-down. Cable runs at the rear of the vehicle, which are exposed to the same contamination as the cameras, should be routed in protective conduit rather than standard loom.

The MDVR unit itself is typically mounted in the cab, away from direct contamination. But vibration levels on a refuse lorry during compaction cycles are significantly higher than on a standard HGV, and the MDVR should be specified and mounted to handle the vibration profile of its host vehicle.
