Direct Vision Standards

At BackWatch, we are committed to promoting road safety and supporting the implementation of the Direct Vision Standards (DVS) to reduce road danger, especially for vulnerable road users. The Mayor of London aims to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from London’s streets by 2041 as part of Vision Zero. Therefore we understand the importance of aligning with this ambitious goal. With updated regulations now in place, it’s more important than ever to ensure your fleet meets the required standards to operate legally and safely in Greater London. We’re here to guide you through these changes and keep your vehicles DVS-compliant.

What are Direct Vision Standards (DVS)?

The DVS represents a groundbreaking initiative aimed at minimising the risk to vulnerable road users caused by poor driver vision, particularly in the case of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). It measures how much a driver can directly see from the cab without the use of cameras or mirrors.

Since 2021, HGVs must have a Safe System installed to operate in London if they have a zero-star DVS rating. The introduction of the DVS has yielded positive results. For example, data indicates a 75% reduction in fatal collisions where poor vision is a contributing factor. However, there were still 46 vulnerable road users involved in non-fatal collisions between March 2021 and March 2022, underscoring the need for further action to achieve Vision Zero.

The Future of Direct Vision Standards (DVS) and Road Safety

Stricter DVS regulations now require HGVs to have a three-star rating or higher – or be equipped with a Progressive Safe System (PSS) to operate in London. These enhanced measures aim to further reduce serious collisions and improve overall road safety.

Staying compliant with DVS regulations is crucial to:

  1. Avoid Penalties – Ensure legal operation within Greater London.
  2. Enhance Safety – Protect vulnerable road users and reduce accident risks.
  3. Support Vision Zero – Contribute to the goal of eliminating road deaths by 2041.
