Your Pre-Compliance Checklist: Installing a Vehicle Sensor System

With safety regulations tightening across the UK, especially under London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS), fleet operators must act fast to stay compliant.

One of the core requirements? Installing a vehicle sensor system, and Backwatch is here to help you with that.

These systems aren’t just a regulatory box-tick, they’re a proven way to reduce accidents, improve driver awareness, and enhance the safety of vulnerable road users. At backwatch, we provide vehicle sensor systems that ensure your fleet meets these essential requirements.

This step-by-step checklist will help ensure your vehicle sensor systems are fitted, functional, and fully compliant.

Step 1: Check Your Vehicle’s DVS Star Rating

You need to understand where you stand. Check your vehicle’s DVS star rating – if it’s below 3 stars, you’re required to upgrade with a Progressive Safe System, which includes a fully functioning vehicle sensor system.

You can check this via the TfL DVS checker or consult your vehicle manufacturer. Backwatch can also assist with checking your fleet’s compliance status.

Step 2: Your Grace Period Status

The deadline to apply for a grace period was 27 October 2024. If you applied and were granted a grace period, you have until 4 May 2025, which means you have less than a month to install the required equipment, including your vehicle sensor system.

Backwatch can help ensure your fleet is fully compliant and ready before the deadline.

Step 3: Evaluate Your Current Safety Setup

Take stock of your existing systems and identify any missing components.

A compliant vehicle sensor system should include:

  • Blind spot detection sensors (especially on the nearside)
  • Audible left-turn warnings
  • Speed and direction-sensitive functionality

Make sure your system meets the updated Progressive Safe System requirements. Backwatch offers a range of sensor systems that cover all these needs, ensuring your fleet’s safety is up to standard.

Step 4: Choose a Reputable Vehicle Sensor System Supplier

This is where Backwatch can support you best. Partner with an experienced supplier who understands both the tech and the regulations.

With Backwatch, you get:

  • DVS-compliant vehicle sensor systems
  • Full installation service
  • Expert guidance tailored to your fleet
  • Ongoing technical support

A trusted partner makes all the difference when timelines are tight. Backwatch ensures that your fleet stays safe and compliant without delay. With less than a month until the deadlineBook now.

Step 5: Book Your Installation NOW

Delays are inevitable when everyone rushes to comply at the last minute. With less than a month left before the grace period ends on 4 May 2025, it’s crucial to act immediately to avoid any compliance issues.

Booking your vehicle sensor system installation now ensures that your fleet is fully equipped and compliant before the deadline.

Step 6: Train Your Drivers on the New System

A vehicle sensor system is only as effective as the person using it. Ensure drivers are trained to understand how the system works, what the alerts mean, and how to respond quickly and safely.

Step 7: Apply for Your Updated HGV Safety Permit

Once your system is installed, don’t forget to apply for a new HGV safety permit via the TfL portal. Without it, you could face penalties even if the system is installed.

Backwatch can help guide you through the application process if needed.

If you have any questions or need any help, please do not hesitate in getting in touch with us and we can work with you to get you compliant.
